\nPharmacotherapeutic group: Local anaesthetic

\nLidocaine is a local anaesthetic of the amide group. It is used to provide local anaesthesia at
\nvarious sites in the body and it acts by inhibiting the ionic refluxes required for the initiation and
\nconduction of impulses, thereby stabilising the neuronal membrane. In addition to blocking
\nconduction in nerve axons in the peripheral nervous system, lidocaine has important effects on
\nthe central nervous system and cardiovascular system. After absorption, lidocaine may cause
\nstimulation of the CNS followed by depression. In the cardiovascular system, it acts primarily on
\nthe myocardium where it may produce decreases in electrical excitability, conduction rate and
\nforce of contraction.<\/p>\n
